Classroom Management

Establishing the Rules
I think that when I have my own classroom I am going to develop the rules with the help of my students. I like the idea of creating the rules with the help of the entire class so there is a mutual understanding of the responsibilities between the teacher and the students. I also like the idea of having two sets of rules; one for the teacher and one for the students. The students can create a list of rules that they expect the teacher to follow, and the teacher can create one for the students. The input for the lists will include the whole class as well as the teacher.

Rewards
Rewards can be a very useful learning tool in an elementary school classroom. I believe that simple praise and acknowledging when a student has done something good is absolutely essential. Recognizing and focusing on what a child has done well is so important and can help them to succeed in school and feel confident in their abilities. Extrinsic awards such as stickers and prizes can serve as valuable motivation tools for young students. They can also be used to recognize work that is well done or when a student displays their fullest potential on an activity.

Procedures and Routines:
Establishing personal space in the classroom is important right from the beginning of the year. Each child should have their own desk, hook and cubby if available. This allows them to have a personal space and an area they can call their own. It is nice for students to personalize their space and creates a sense of property for each child. Their individual space can also act as an area of comfort and familiarity. Students must also be aware of the teacher’s space. They must learn that entering the teacher’s space or any other student’s space is not allowed without permission.

 Communication
There are a wide variety of ways to develop means of communication between the teacher and students. Communication varies depending on the class and the level of the students. I think it is important to distribute a class schedule to the students as well as a syllabus so they are aware of what will be happening in the classroom. I like the idea of having an area where students can discuss any concerns they have or write comments about specific things that have happened in class.

Organization
Organization is one of the most important things to consider in classroom management as an elementary school teacher. It is essential that the classroom materials and routines are well organized to ensure the greatest success for all students. Color coded notebooks and folders help to keep students organized, and help to ensure the smooth running of the class. Having future assignments and homework displayed on a board at all times keeps students organized and well aware of what is happening in the class. All additional materials such as games, books and writing materials should be stored away and clearly labeled for easy access when needed.

Consequences
Consequences are a difficult aspect of classroom management to determine. I am not a firm believer in fixed consequences. I think that responsible consequence is a more realistic way to discipline students. Responsible consequence helps students work through their problems and can also be more useful in a classroom of varied students of all different abilities and needs.
